It meets two major aims:
to identify the functional and physical characteristics of a product and to draw up the associated documents, to control the changes of these characteristics, to record and communicate the state of the implementation of the changes.
to allow all the members of the project to use, a given moment of the lifecycle, identical data and profiting from the same state of control.
Configuration management is initialized at the start of the project by the identification of articles of configuration. Reference configurations are established during the cycle of life.
It complements change management and supports the whole of the engineering process.
Configuration management is a basic activity of project implementation (refer to CMMI, PM Bok and ITIL).
